Courtney Conlogue secures her place in the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro Quarter-finals
America’s Courtney Conlogue successfully jumped into the Quarter-finals of the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro, the fifth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series, after barely getting his hands on top honours
in the first heat of Round 3 that went down at Barra da Tijuca on in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 12.
Conlogue got the win over Hawaii’s Alessa Quizon and Australia’s Tyler Wright, consequently relegating her two rivals to the elimination round to surf again for a place in the Quarter-finals.
For the first time since the start of the latest edition of Billabong Rio Pro, the competition arrived at its primary site of Barra da Tijuca. The first and second round went down at the alternative event venue of Arpoador due to the promising waves on offer.
However, the event organisers decided to shift back to the original site. The move did not work out in favour of the contest as tricky one-to-two foot waves arrived at the primary event site. However, the inconsistent tide did not have a significant effect
on the intensity of the battles, with the elite female surfers holding nothing back while looking to secure a Quarter-final spot.
The opening heat of Round 3 pitted Conlogue against Quizon and Wright. Both Conlogue and Wright were in a form of their life, asserting themselves as formidable competitors since the start of the season and collecting outstanding results along the way. The
American talent was coming straight off a win from Australia and was looking to keep the momentum going.
As the battle for the Quarter-final spot got underway, the 19-year-old Conlogue did not get off to the best of starts. She struggled to adapt to the challenging conditions during the early stages of the battle, but gradually built momentum. In the final
minutes of the heat, she posted a 5.07 on the score-board and immediately backed it up with an impressive 6.80-point ride for a heat-total of 11.87 points.
Quizon, the event wild-card, was comfortably sitting in the lead after collecting a couple of scores in the five-point range for a heat-total of 11.66 points. However, she failed to defend her position against Conlogue.
Wright failed to make much of an impact during her Round 3 bout, scoring a 4.03 and 3.93 off her best-two waves for a heat-total of 7.96 points. As a result, she was forced to take the tougher road to the Quarter-final.
