Courtney Conlogue triumphs over Tyler Wright and Rebecca Woods in Round 1 of Roxy Pro France 2011
Some of the world’s most talented female surfers converged to the renowned Cote des Basques beach in Biarritz, France, for the first round of Roxy Pro, the sixth of the seven stops on Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, on Tuesday,
July 12th.
Pitted against Australia’s Tyler Wright and Rebecca Woods in the opening heat of the no-elimination Round 1, America’s Courtney Conlogue managed to clinch the win, though just barely, to advance directly to Round 3 of the competition. Wright and Woods rounded
out the second and third place, consequently heading to the second round.
The surfing conditions at Cote des Basques beach were nothing that the surfers could get excited about. The low tides, with around two-to three foot waves, were expected to keep the talented females from showing their true potential. The waves did not carry
enough juice to allow the ladies to go for the more technical and stylish manoeuvres, much to the dismay of the crowd.
As the first heat of the event kicked off, 26-year-old Woods drew first blood by locking a wave in the opening minutes to score a 4.50 off it and move into the lead. Her compatriot Wright got into action a while later to earn 4.05 points off her wave to
reduce the gap and relieve some pressure.
The 27-year-old Wright soon added another 5.90 points to her account to move to a heat-total of 9.95 points and take the lead from her countrywoman. Woods made an effort to take the lead back, but only managed a 3.65 off her second wave, moving to a heat-total
of 8.15 and finishing behind Wright.
Conlogue, also known as “Lil Tiger”, truly acted like a sleeping tiger for most of the heat, patiently hunting for a good wave. Just when it seemed that the Californian surfer was done for, she pounced at her unsuspecting rivals with a couple of good waves
to move above them on the scoreboard. With just a few minutes left on the clock, she caught a wave to earn 5.75 off it and immediately followed it up with a 5.15-point wave to move to a heat-total of 10.90, sealing the fate of the heat.
Clinching top honours in her Round 1 heat, the 18-year-old American moved directly to the third round, while Wright and Woods headed to the second round to compete for a spot in Round 3.
