Courtney Miller wins Girls 100yard backstroke gold – West Virginia High School State Championships
Courtney Miller of BUHS won gold medal of the Girls 100yard backstroke on concluding day of the West Virginia High School State Championships for Boys and Girls in Morgantown on February 18.
With her irresistible efforts, Miller crushed hopes of her competitors in the start. She remained prominently ahead of her competitors and was the only swimmer to post a sub one minute effort in the discipline.
She submitted a fascinating time of 56.93 seconds to earn gold medal of the event. The champion was followed by Erika T Poling of HURR, who remained almost two body lengths slower from her and touched the finishing blockade with timing of 1 minute and 01.12 seconds for silver medal.
Poling was trailed by Savannah C Slaughter of GWHS, who surfaced on the concluding wall with the timing of 1 minute and 02.01 seconds for bronze medal.
Moments later, Kelsey A Ferguson of Weir appeared on the starting blocks for the Girls 100yard breaststroke. With her laudable efforts, Ferguson sprinted her way towards the finishing end and reported a time of 1 minute and 07.72 seconds for gold medal.
The champion was shadowed by Emily J Sotomayor of CCHS, who ended her race with a second fastest effort of 1 minute and 08.89 seconds. Katlyn Curnes of WPHS proved her eligibility for the third best finishing spot as she produced an effort of 1 minute and 10.02 seconds.
The last event of the session was Girls 400yard freestyle relay, where EHS accomplished gold medal of the event in a time of 3 minutes and 43.38 seconds. They were followed by relay squad of MHS, which remained almost two seconds behind and secured second position in the event with the timing of 3 minutes and 45.19 seconds.
The third position of the relay event was seized by PKHS’s team, which ended their race in 3 minutes and 52.38 seconds.
The crowd appreciated exhausting efforts of all contestants in their exclusive events whereas the championship concluded after the conclusion of all events. In addition, position holders received medals at the medal ceremony of the championship.
