Cover up interior stucco?

Question

Going into my basement in my home we have some stucco spiky walls we tryed removing it but it took a few hours and a few scrub brushes to only do a 2 x 2 . I was wonderign if anyone new a way to cover this up cheap and easier. Like i said its on both walls leading down to the basement so alot of work.

skim coat with joint compound, sand, prime & paint
