Question:

Coverage of Australian athlete's homecoming - over the top?

Anyone watching Channel 7's "Sunrise" coverage of the return home of the Aussie olympic team as disturbed as I was by the heroic welcome? The arrival of the planes set to parade style music made me cringe and wonder if we were witnessing the return of war heroes from conflict rather than sports people. Not even our diggers would get this kind of welcome. Waaaaay over the top and just ridiculous. They won some medals, hooray, good on them, now get over it!!!

  1. What do you expect from that television drivel?

  2. I agree with you 500%, but remember who we're dealing with here.  According to Channel 7 there were only 3 or 4 countries competing at the games, and Australia won 580 gold medals according to their bizarre adjusted medal tally.  These are not people who understand the concepts of subtlety or understatement.

  3. Yeah, but ch7 is milking as much of what's left of the Olympics as much as possible since they're not doing it in 2012

Regarding the 'adjusted tally', I agree it's totally ridiculous, and wrong as well. I remember once they showed NZ on top and then Aus second, when at the time there were other smaller countries that should have been before, like Jamaica and Belarus. unless they're calculating a different way..

like +100 points for being Aus or close to Aus....
