Covering Wallpaper???

I'm about to move into a rental that has the oldest tackest wallpaper in the kitchen area. The owner LOVES this wallpaper and I HATE it. I know they will not allow me to paint over it or replace it, so I was thinking of some sort of fabric that could be stapled or tacked over the wall. I'm not sure what fabric to use, or the best way to get it hung. NEED HELP!!!

  1. having done walls with fabric, I can tell you that the kitchen isn't very forgiving or nice to a fabric wall. There are a few options though, although you don't say how large the kitchen area is, how many walls or what size you're going to be covering.

I would try buying some inexpensive canvas in a neutral tone, , covering it with stencils or something that you like, or even a freehand painting job thats old country looking, sealing it with a varnish or sealant such as you'd use to make a stenciled floor cloth and hanging it using some upholstery tacks near the ceiling so that you're not violating the wallpaper that this person obviously wants to keep.

It will be more washable and easier to handle in a kitchen area, which, lets face it. has its own challenges with regard to keeping it clean such as a great deal of moisture and food scents , as well as splashes and grease. .

  2. I think you are stuck with it, if you use staples you will need a ton of them and then some or allot of them will not grip it very well with going into plaster, as you would need big gauge ones and depends all so on the weight of the fabric you will be using if it is a very very light one like nets then it could be possible, but with aloud of staples going around the top near the ceiling line it make leave marks later on when you move out, so if there is a deposit involved you may lose it as in the terms for damages that you have caused so try a few staples first using a sample of fabric in a hidden place and if it works and comes down OK, then is all good,
