Covering up in Tunisia (Muslim country, help needed!)

My fiancee and I are going on our honeymoon to Tunisia in the first week of September. I bought a little AA guide book to learn phrases and find good places to go see and it has warnings about women going out alone and saying you must cover up outside the hotel as it's a strict Muslim country.

I know about covering you head in religious places but I don't know how covered up it means. I'm not planning on struttingaroundd in a bikini but I usually wear shortsknee lengthh skirt and a vest top. Is that enough or do I need to cover my arms and legs? I've head so manyscaryy things about covering up and pushy sales people I'm starting toregrett booking it which I hate!

So anyone been there, or live there? How covered up should I be? Is it really as bad for women as people have been making out for me? I heard it's a bit like Spain was 20 years ago. I just want a relaxing holiday :-p

Staying in Mahdia if that helps! :)

  1. hi,

clearly you are terrified.take no notice.i have never been to mahdia, but you should be alright.it is similar to P.E.K.

if you need to know more just contact me through here, and i will be happy to help.

  2. Knee length shorts and tshirts should be fine. Take a sarong out with you so you can cover legs or arms if necessary. Knees and shoulders definitely need to be covered if you visit anywhere religious. Sales people are pushy and you will start off politely saying "no thank you" which rapidly degenerates into just ignoring them! I've been to egypt and jordan and had no problems with either sales people or men in general. Relax and enjoy yourself! Check out the lonely planet and/or rough guides as they are very informative.

  3. im going sept 7th with my partner!!!!

ive never been before, but like u ive heard all sorts of stuff, and i wasnt realy worried but just dont want to do anything wrong, or dis-respectful!

    ive researched loads of stuff!

Tunisia is a really safe place and has a very low crime rate, ive heard as a woman you can walk round at night on ur own n feel perfectly safe!

dont worry about covering up in the touristy areas, its just if u go into the main towns cover yourself up, as in a long skirt n top! dont need to cover your head or anything like that! ive just brough a really thin white long dress for when we go travelling outside of our hotel!

Generaly ppl who have never been tunisia say ooooo be careful going there. but i speak 2 people who LOVE it and go every year n say take no notice of them people its perfectly safe!

    Have a great honeymoon!

  4. you normally have to cover your arms and legs, so try some loose fitting cotton shirts and long skirts.

  5. went to tunisia last year and it was amazing. i was in port el kantaoiu, sousse and hammamet which are touriy areas. and all i lived in were vests shorts and knee length skirts. but.... your gonna be there during ramadam so i would have a little more respect and bring a light shawl. the one thing is tunisian men love girls wit big b*****s so be careful bout that. i was with my fiancee and as he's a  big strong fella so had no trouble except for the ogling!! if you have any problems wit pushy ppl  mention the police. tunisians live in fear of the police as haddling a tourist is a serious crime there. and you'll be surprised how many man  were your waiter the night before!!! and also own a shop!!!! just stay in touristy sts and besides its your honeymoon!! just relax on the beach or pool. if you like some more info feel free to email me usng my profile link. congrats

  6. If this is in public you need to cover your shoulders and knees. so a shirt and long dress would do. but if you want to go to a mosque you need to cover everything but your face. and hands.

  7. Iv been there and knee lenght dhorts skirts and t shirts are fine dont worry!!
