Cowboys Tony Romo expects to start against New York Giants, Coach Garrett still cautious – NFL News
After taking part in limited practice on Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expecting to start the season-finale against New York Giants on Sunday. However, coach, Jason Garrett, is still cautious and keeping his options open.
Romo, who hurt is hand during the Christmas Eve’s game against Philadelphia Eagles and was eventually sidelined, said that he is improving day by day.
"Today was good. I was able to do some things with the ball that we weren't sure about, so it was a good start to the week," the quarterback said.
Earlier, the test and X-Ray results had shown that Romo’s injury was not very severe.
Although Romo did not make it to the Pro Bowl, but he still is a valuable asset and his presence against the Giants will be vital for the Cowboys.
This season, he has played all the 15 games where he completed 317 passes of 485 attempts for 3,895 yards. He has thrown 29 touchdowns and only nine interceptions and carries a quarterback rating of 102.2.
Romo could have finished the game against the Eagles, but the management decided to rest him so he did not aggravate the injury.
The Cowboys-Giants game is crucial for both the team as the winner will lead the National Football Conference (NFC) East division and reach the playoffs.
Everyone expects and wants Romo to start the game on Sunday, but coach, Jason Garrett, played his cards close to his chest on Wednesday and did not give any official word about who would start the game.
He, however, said that he is keeping all his options open and will make a decision later in the week. He said:
"It's still early. We hope that he progresses. He has progressed since the game, so we'll see how he responds to the work today and hopefully he'll do more work tomorrow and get himself ready to play this game. But we have to be ready for all alternatives."
While Romo was limited in practice, backup quarterback, Stephen McGee, had some extra reps. McGee could start if Romo does not able to properly grip the ball.
Romo’s absence could hurt the Cowboys as McGee has only played in one game this season. Against the Eagles, he took the field after Romo’s injury and completed 24 passes of 38 attempts for 182 yards. He also sent a touchdown and got the quarterback rating
of 83.4.
Meanwhile, running back, Felix Jones, also participated in practice on Wednesday and is also hopeful to start against the Giants.
