Cowboys officially sign Sammy Morris as DeMarco Murray placed on injured reserve – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday placed the rookie DeMarco Murray on injured reserve after the player sustained injury during the Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. On the other hand, veteran running back Sammy Morris, who was
expected to join the Cowboys, has signed a contract with the franchise.
Murray’s injury is likely to end the season for him. Against Giants, he left the field in the first quarter and never returned.
Now that Murray is not there, the Cowboys are going to start with Felix Jones, who has recently recovered from injury. He also finished the game against Giants once Murray was out. However, adopting a precautionary measure, the
franchise has signed Morris to serve as Jones’ backup. Coach Jason Garrett is also satisfied with Morris’ inclusion in the team.
"He's certainly the right kind of guy in the role that he's had in his career," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said about Morris. "He's done it as well as anybody."
Morris, an 11-year veteran, was cut out by New England Patriots in training camps last year. He has also played for Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.
The 34-year-old veteran has got a job offer when he thought his career was almost over.
"Working out, but obviously not football-working-out like I wanted to, but trying to make the most of my downtime. ... I was kind of just getting into the mode of officially being done, and then I got the call," he said.
The newly-signed Cowboys’ running back has 2,955 rushing yards to his credit for 708 attempts with an average of 4.2 yards per attempt. He said that he will try to do his best as long as he is staying with the franchise.
"I don't think there's much more to make of it outside of that. I just need to do my job,” he said.
Cowboys have won seven games this season and lost six. They are tied for the first place with New York Giants in the National Football Conference East division. They have got three more games in the regular season. This Saturday,
they will take on Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They will face Philadelphia Eagles and Giants in the week 16 and 17 respectively.
