one of my coworkers who works on my nights off (only 2 or 3 days a week, i am the full time for that shift, she is the part time) always calls me on my weekends off to work for her. sometimes i don't mind but it gets old i have a life too. managment knows but doesn't care as long as they don't have to come in. on weekends now i have to shut off my phone because of the calls and the manager had to work one night cause of that now they say i have to come in next time. i think its bull that they know what this girl is up to but don't do anything about it. the girl only doesn't want to work cause she has parties to go to but claims its an "emergency". aside from finding a new job, is there anything else i can do? also, if they try telling me to come in one night when the coworker won't work, can they fire me if i tell them no?

  1. They might be breaking the law if they are making you work more than however many hours a week and not giving you overtime. Anyway, it sounds like they either need to fire this girl or you should find a better job.

  2. Get your cellphone number changed and tell her you don't have a phone anymore, and that she can just email if she needs to contact you.

    :D

Edit: Just use your cellphone for close friends & family but not for coworkers, that's what I do.

  3. next she calls you are not obligated to work for her. Tell her that you have other plans for the weekend off. She using you for that purpose.

  4. Maybe they could fire you. Try being honest with your manager and work out a compromise.  They do want to lose you and be stuck with her. Maybe you could say something like you are willing to volunteer to take on a shift at the last minute 3 times a year but you need to have your scheduled time off.  If they cannot work out a compromise, you should decide if this is the job for you.
