Hi I am on the fence about this I have been with the same employer for 5 years two people have been hired since me that have less experience and less responsibility than I, I found out I am paid alot less and we are not to talk about wages it is grounds for termination. The thing is my boss always tells me I am the rock of the office and we are pretty close we even go to the same church, I am so hurt and I cant let him know that I know but I am pissed off what do I do?

  1. The next time he compliments you, ask for a raise.  Give him all the reasons why you should be paid more.

  2. are you sure those other people are telling you the truth --if it is true i would ask him---you could put it like this----i have heard rumors that some people who havent been here as long as i have are making more money

  3. Do not mention it until you are ready to find another job and are ready to quit your current job. It can be very hard to bear that you are being cheated after so many years of dedication. I would say go for the raise first. If that fails, then start looking for another job before spilling the beans about the wages and terminating employment.

  4. First off they can say discussing wages is grounds for a termination, however enforcing that is illegal. That is against the right for employees to organize.

  5. If you really don't want to let slip that you know how much others are being paid, talk to the boss about renegotiating your wages due to the increase in the cost of living. If that doesn't work, then say you would just like higher wages.

It really shouldn't be a firing offense to know what other people are making. Is that even legal???
