Cox Classic: Ben Kohles second Web.com Tour event in a row
During the last week of July 2012, Ben Kohles from the United States decided to turn professional and made his debut with an appearance at the Web.com Tour’s Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.
At the end of his debut week, he had his maiden professional title victory added to his resume.
The next week, he participated in the Cox Classic and the results were the same for him – he won the event with a three stroke margin over Dawie van der Walt, with a 24-under par tournament score.
He was sensational right from the start of the tournament, as he remained bogey-free in three of the four rounds. The Friday’s round saw him make only two bogeys that came on the eighth and ninth hole.
On Sunday, he started off his final round campaign with a third place on the leaderboard. He recorded five birdies on the front nine and four after the turn to finish with a nine-under par 62.
Meanwhile, Walt managed to score an impressive 11-under par 60. However, Kohles’ 62 was enough to earn him his second victory of the year and a spot in the 2013 PGA Tour season.
"I think I played the best round of my life today. That was a blast," Kohles said after hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation. "I'm pretty shocked myself. What are you supposed to do better than this?"
After his first victory, he became the first player to win a Web.com Tour event in his debut experience. This time, he has become the only player to record victories in his first two tour events after turning professional.
He now aims to make it three in a row when he will tee off at next week’s Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield.
He now has a total of $261,000 in his pocket as prize money, which lists him second in the tour money list. Therefore, he does not need to worry about his PGA Tour card, as he can easily retain his position among the top-25 at the end of the season.
"I don't think that part has sunk in yet," Kohles said. "It's pretty life-altering".
