Question:

Cozumel safety?

A friend and I are thinking of booking a trip to Cozumel and stay at a "budget hotel" or hostel so we can do a lot of excursions and diving and enjoy the nightlife. I have some hotels in mind but I'm concerned about safety. Is Cozumel generally pretty safe or are there areas that we should avoid? We're two single women, both 30 yrs old and experienced travellers. All info is greatly appreciated!

  1. Always be careful, but Cozumel is about the safest place I've visited. Being a guy, it's a different story, but I have had no problems walking from a bar downtown to my hotel (close to downtown) at 3am.

It's a pretty tight community and the people are friendly. I usually stay at the Barracuda.

  2. Hey Sandy, Cozumel is completely safe. Check out http://www.caribeblu.net./caribe/. Great little hotel on the water, ocean views, great scuba and hotel package prices. The dive shop is awesome and everyone working there is great, they make you feel like family. You will feel extreemly safe at this hotel. Located just south of town on the mian road. My wife and I frequent Cozumel and we have stayed in plenty of AI's in Cozumel and the Yucatan and I stay at Blu Caribe all the time now.

Check out tripadvisor.com; Cozumel: hotels and look at the reviews.

  3. Anyplace you travel in this world has unsafe areas.  However, remember that Cozumel is primarily a tourist destination.  The economy is based around tourism.  Therefore, the locals and authorities work hard to keep the tourists happy and safe.

In general, I find Mexico to be a wonderful place to visit.  Yes, there are unsafe areas with unsafe people.  However, I have faced just as many "bad" places in the US.

Have fun.  Be reasonable, and you will be safe.
