The Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby runner up, Bodemeister, didn’t post a huge work at Churchill Downs on 14 May, as he just galloped, but there was still some eye catching work went down, as Cozzetti’s work was the highlight of the morning, going five furlongs in 58 4/5 seconds.
Trained by Dale Romans for Albaugh Family Stable, Cozzetti’s five furlong work was broken down into fractions and he was recorded for the quarter mile in 11 3/5 seconds and 23 1/5 seconds, while he turned in half mile in 34 4/5 seconds and 46 4/5 seconds.
The son of Cozzene wrapped up his morning work with galloping out three quarters in 1 minute and 12 2/5 seconds.
“He’s ready to go,” trainer Dale Romans said. “We wanted a good work and he likes a track with a little water on it. I think he’s going to run huge.”
Out of Lemon Drop Kid mare Lemon Drop Cello, Cozzetti’s work wasn’t the only at Churchill Downs as, Hierro, owned by the Stronestreet Stables also breezed five furlongs.
Winner of the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes, Hierro’s work was also recorded in fractions going quarter mile in 12 4/5 and 25 2/5 seconds while topping half mile in 37 1/5 and 49 seconds.
The son of Hard Spun was impressive when he downed his final quarter in 24 seconds flat, while galloping out three quarters in 1 minute and 14 4/5 seconds as Hierro’s over all five furlongs took 1 minute and 1 1/5 seconds.
Steven Asmussen trained Isn’t He Clever worked ahead of the Preakness Stakes. Just like Hierro, Asmussen got Isn’t He Clever on field and on the wet track the Borderland Derby winner and Sunland Derby runner up breezed a half.
