Question:

Crack, ding, fracture?

I picked up a used Ellis hyrbid surfboard...and it has some pressure dings that looks to be caused by like scraping rocks or something.

The fiberglass damage(?) has tiny cracks around one area around 4 inches long. And there is a slight yellowing color here.

Can I patch this myself? The indentation is very slight at this point, though I do see the cracks and the extra yellowing around this area.

Is this called a ding or a fracture?

THANKS

  1. Plain old indentations in the glass are probably just 'pressure dings', and even though they suck, they are not all that harmful. But, the discoloration would worry me a bit. You may have water leaking through the glass into the foam. That can lead to delamination and or rotted foam, and can be a big headache to fix up when it gets bad. I would jog on down to the local surf shop and have the ding man check it out. It probably won't cost too much, and if you like the board, it can be worth it.

  2. As long as its not epoxy...Not much to do about the pressure dings, as for the "fiberglass damage" one of the easiest things to do would be SunCure. Its easy to use, with directions, and dries in the sun. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but SunCure or something like it is usually a good solution.

  3. Since you have yellowing, the glass is cracked through to the foam and water is leaking in.  The best way to fix it, assuming you only have a few shallow cracks) is to let it dry a couple of days first.  Then get a small tube of Sun Cure.  Use a razor blade to widen the cracks slightly so the resin will get all the way to the foam.  Then slightly sand the surface on each side of the cracked area.  Tape the surface outside the sanded area so it won't collect resin.  Use a Popsicle stick to spread the resin over the cracks.  Pull the tape in a minute or so when the resin starts to set.  That way you won't have a sharp edge of resin on the surface.

Depending on where the ding is and your board rocker, this fix should work for the cracks fine.  There isn't anything you can do about pressure dings that won't make them look worse.

  4. its a ding man... it happens all the time and its really no big deal unless waters getting inside your board... and if thats the case and you value your stick id take it to the shop!
