I have an air cooled lister and my stupid crew member fell against it at sea and cracked it right on the bend after the manifold, i have bodged it up but it still blows air a bit, will this effect the running of the engine ie get too hot etc, i am gonna get it sorted as soon as i got time but will it be ok to run it like that for a few days

  1. if its a Lister diesel you don't need back pressure the engine if anything will run better,if the exhaust has broke its cast iron,it will have to be welded by gas or cast iron arc electrodes,

  2. may be heavier on fuel for a while til its fixed

  3. If it is leaking inside the engine box it could cause the engine to run at a higher temp. and recirculate carbon from the exhaust into the engine and the fins of the air cooling.  Try a "Gun Gum" bandage (from most garages and auto shops) - should hold it for a few days - but they are not meant for diesels, too much pressure in the exhaust manifold !

  4. yes and dont call him stupid   you hired him so whos the stupid one

  5. Lose of back pressure will make a Lister loose power by as much as 20% , get sombody with a mig welder to weld it up if it is cast metal replace it

  6. The main thing is to consider where the escaping hot gases may impinge, ie. on the structure, fuel lines, into the cabin etc. Other than that it should be fine for a few days, maybe down on power a bit.  And shouldn't you have some protection around the engine? Or did your mate move that too?

  7. Only if you like breathing exhaust> Not a good idea>Get fiberglass or asbestos rap and keep raping it till it stops leaking till you get to where it can be repaired>

  8. it will be ok....
