Question:

Crackle Painting- How to?

I have tried the Sherwin Williams Crackle Medium and it is proving to be very difficult. I tried it with a 2 inch brush, but it did not look good at all. I also tried a roller, but it was difficult to completely cover the area evenly. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work and cover evenly? I want deep long cracks.

Thanks for helping in advance!

  1. The thickness of the paint application will give you deeper cracks.  The thicker the paint, the wider the cracks.  Also, you can only apply the paint in one direction, one time for the medium to work.  Another words, you have a one shot deal and cannot go over or change the direction of the top coat.  You have to load the applicator with a lot of paint, go one direction only and don't try to stretch the paint.  I find sponge applicators, whether the brush type or the roller type can be saturated with enough paint to get the effect to look good.  But, when using the roller, you only get 1-2 complete turns of the roller before you have to reload it with paint.
