Question:

Crackling sound on wood floors?

My new wood floors have a very faint crackling sound when I step on them. The first step I take into the room sends a little compression wave outwards from my foot. What's the cause and will it go away with time? FYI: I put 4 nails in each 37" board. I have to emphasize that it's very very faint. It's not so much the sound that bothers me as the possibility that there is something seriously wrong with the floor.

  1. try adding some baby powder, or tiny bit of oil.

  2. Probably there has been a change in the humidity in your home. The wood could have been damp when installed and has now dried slightly. Go to a floor covering store and talk to some of their installers, maybe they can help explain what happened.

  3. It is probably the finish - which has set like a film over the joints - as the floor flexes especially if you have an acoustic underlay  these will break. When they have all 'given', the noise should stop. You could wax the floor to reseal the joints but becareful not to make the floor slippery in the process.

  4. More likely the humidity has went up and floor expanded tighter and now possibly rubbing together.. lack of nails a very poss  cause too.. Do try the baby powder but NOT oil that ll attract dirt into edges...  You put a paper barrier(Tar paper) between floors? Wood could be rubbing there too.. Bugging you to much you ll have to go below and s***w up from below but this is dangerous as not to put s***w right thru the new floor  GL

And if its a prefinished floor do not try to ad any topcoat .. With the newer finishes it will not accept a new coating wax urethane or anything else
