Question:

Cracks in primer while painting cabinets.

I am painting my cabinets for the first time and did the following:

1) Took off all hardware.

2) De-greased my cabinets.

3) Sanded them down

4) Spread liquid sander on them

Despite having done all of this, I have small cracks that have appeared in my primer that will not disappear no matter how many times I paint over them. I am using a cheap, Walmart brand primer that I had left over from a previous job that I had been storing in my garage, could this be the problem? Could anybody please give me some advice on how to fix this? Thank you!

  1. Try Kilz, it's a cover anything primer that they sell at Home Depot. Or you could try "gripper paint" from a painting supply house.

  2. I am confused. What is liquid sander?I paint professionally and this usually happens when the surface that you paint has some kind of a chemical to which paint will not stick( silicone)for example.I suggest that you buy Kils primer shellock spray and spray the affected areas. It should show you results in 20 minutes. If it still cracks then definitely it someting underneath that it's not sticking to.You will have to scrape right down to the wood, sand, primer and paint.Simplify next time.Do not use too many chemicals to clean and such.Simple wash and sanding will do.There are good painting products out there today and don't be cheap in price.Trust me it pays off on the end.
