Question:

Craftsman 19 hp riding mower model 917270912. I can start the motor fine. engange the drive and it stops.?

The mower motor will idle with clutch engage, but release clutch and the engine will die. What could be wrong with the mower?

  1. Need more info / symptoms to give an accurate answer. Based on the limted info, if you mean the wheel drive clutch, I would blame a bad seat switch or wire to it. The rider thinks you are getting off the seat while in gear and is turning off the spark as a safety precaution.  Sears owners manuals include wiring diagrams and are very helpful. Sears.com/parts


  2. Is all the running gear free to move? Check to see that all pulleys,bearings, clutches etc. are free to turn. If they are free you may have a dirty/ misajusted carb- the engine has enough fuel to run until you put a load on it. Remove the carb bowl and drain you may have water in it. Reassemble and open the mixture jet just a hair and see if you get better results.

  3. Is your trany froze up or stiff putting too much load on the motor

  4. Sounds like something is hung up some where. Check the drive belt.
