Craig Bellamy suggests he almost ended up at Manchester United
Cardiff City striker Craig Bellamy has suggested that Manchester United were among the clubs interested in securing his services over the summer.
The on-loan Manchester City man was effectively forced out of the English Premier League club when manager Roberto Mancini said that the Welshman would not be included in the 25-man EPL squad.
That led to a clamour for the 31-year-old’s signature from all manner of clubs, including several EPL outfits and Scottish Premier League Celtic, before he opted to drop down to the Football League Championship
and make a season-long loan move to his home-town side.
However, the player has hinted that the Red Devils and Tottenham Hotspur were interested, though it would have taken something special for him to be allowed to move to one of City’s rivals for a place
in the top four of the league.
He told BBC Radio Five Live on Wednesday that: "Tottenham wasn't going to get done and someone else came in above them as well which would have caused a few stirs. If I would have said I wanted to go there
for one minute my life at Man City . . . staying there would have really tough for the next couple of weeks."
City and Man U are fierce rivals in the English football landscape. When asked if the ‘someone else’ he had referred to was United, he didn't confirm it explicitly, but hinted it.
"I ain't gonna say anything but it would have been a tough couple of weeks. It would have been a miracle if it had come off. I sat down with my agent and we were realistic, do we hold out for it or do I
go on? And I think because of the other club being interested I think Man City panicked as well and said 'you can go to Cardiff' and they pushed it through as quickly as possible."
