Craig Bellamy wants extended Cardiff City stay
Craig Bellamy has revealed he would be keen to stay at Cardiff City for the rest of his career if his loan move from Manchester City works out well.
In an interview with Sport Wales, he said that: "If we are successful as a team and I'm successful it gives me a much stronger chance of being here for the rest of my career, I'd love to stay."
The striker has made the season-long switch to his hometown club after rumours of bust-ups with City manager Roberto Mancini and feeling as though his first-team opportunities at the club would be limited under the new English Premier League 25-man squad rules. However, Bellamy said that if he is to have any hope of staying with the Blubirds beyond next summer, he will have to prove his worth on the pitch.
He added that: "If we don't get promoted to the Premier League and I don't have a particularly good year, how can I justify being here another year and how can Cardiff justify trying to keep me? You have to be realistic. It all depends on how I play and how we do as a team. I'm just focusing on the year, doing well and getting promoted."
Bellamy, 31, got his Cardiff career off to a flying start after the new team captain created two assists and curled home a free-kick from 35 yards in a 4-0 defeat of Doncaster Rovers in the Football League Championship on Saturday.
Despite having debts of around £30m, Cardiff have boosted their squad with the loan arrivals of Bellamy, Jason Koumas (Wigan), Seyi Olofinjana (Hull City) and Daniel Drinkwater (Manchester United) in their bid for promotion to the EPL this season. Several bookmakers have now placed the Welsh side as one of the favourites to move up to the top flight next season.
