Craig Benson and Kelly Gunnell conquer swimming events: Day three –Commonwealth Youth Games
Craig Benson of Scotland and Kelly Gunnell of South Africa excelled their sprints in the finals of Men’s 50m breast-stroke and Women’s 200m breast-stroke respectively, to capture the gold medal of their events on day three of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth
Games on September 11, in Isle of Man.
Benson overpowered the efforts of his fellow competitors in the single-lap breast-stroke swim, by completing his distance in a superb time of 27.79 seconds for the gold medal. Benson was trailed by Tommy Sucipto of Australia, who was 0.59 seconds behind
him and secured the silver medal of the event, with a timing of 28.38 seconds. Sucipto managed a lead of 1.10 seconds over his following swimmer, Omiros Zagkas of Cyprus, who clinched the bronze medal of the event, by submitting a time of 29.48 seconds.
The fourth position of the breast-stroke discipline was secured by Matthew Chen of Jamaica, who concluded his swim in a fourth best time of 30.52 seconds. Afterwards, Joshua Lewis of Guernsey transpired as the fifth position holder of the Men’s one-lap swim,
by finishing his swim in a time of 31.27 seconds. Lewis was trailed by Andrea Agius of Malta, who clocked a time of 31.75 seconds for sixth position.
In the Women’s 200m discipline, Gunnell obtained the fastest spot of the event and captured the gold medal of the event in a time of 2 minutes and 25.22 seconds. She was trailed by Molly Renshaw of England, who was just 0.28 seconds behind Gunnell and claimed
the silver medal of the event with a timing of 2 minutes and 25.50 seconds. Natasha Lloyd of New Zealand emerged as the third fastest swimmer of the event and completed her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 27.37 seconds for bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Justine Macfarlane of South Africa appeared on the finishing wall, as she was almost one second behind her preceding swimmer and ended her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 28.24 seconds. She was followed by Karlene Pircher of Australia, who stayed
marginally away from her and concluded her four-lap breast-stroke sprint in a time of 2 minutes and 28.58 seconds for fifth position. Emily Jones of Scotland was the sixth fastest swimmer of the event, as she was almost four seconds slower than her former
finisher and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 32.11 seconds.
Benson and Gunnell expressed happiness after conquering the titles of their exclusive events. In addition, position holders of these events received their awards and accolades after the conclusion of the session.
