Craig Benson captures Men’s 100m breast-stroke title: Day one – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Craig Benson of Scotland captured gold medal of Men’s 100m breast-stroke meet on the first day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on Friday, September 9, in Isle of Man.
Benson proved his dominance for the title of the dual lap breast-stroke swim by submitting a time of 59.63 seconds. He was followed by Australian swimmer, Tommy Sucipto, who remained 1.52 seconds slower than him on the finishing wall and posted a time of
1 minute and 01.15 seconds for silver medal. Third spot on the podium was claimed by Kurt Benjamin of South Africa, who stayed nearly five seconds behind the silver medallist and posted a time of 1 minute and 06.37 seconds.
Benson impressed the arena with his gold claiming effort, as he qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final. Nevertheless, the 17-year-old Scottish swimmer remained dominant in the first lap, as he posted a time of 29.11 seconds and stayed marginally
away from his strongest competitors. Then, he sprinted his way towards the finishing wall in the final lap, where his accelerated swim placed him considerably ahead of his fellow competitors and he clinched the title of the event.
Benjamin was followed by Omiros Zagkas of Cyprus, who completed his swim in a fourth best time of 1 minute and 06.56 seconds. Zagkas remained 0.56 seconds ahead of his subsequent swimmer, Joshua Lewis of Guernsey, who appeared on the wall with a timing of
1 minute and 07.12 seconds.
The sixth spot of the swim was secured by Giovanni Guarino of Jersey, who remained only 0.15 seconds slower than Lewis and clocked a time of 1 minute and 07.27 seconds. Meanwhile, Andrea Agius of Malta transpired as the seventh position holder of the event,
as he reported a time of 1 minute and 09.66 seconds. Agius was chased by Ronaldo R Rodrigues of Guyana, who ended his race in 1 minute and 11.60 seconds.
The session ended after its final event, while the championship will continue for two consecutive days to complete all swimming events.
