Craig Benson clinches Men’s 50m breast-stroke gold title: Day three – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Craig Benson of Scotland won the gold medal of Men’s 50m breast-stroke final on the concluding day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, held in Isle of Man.
Benson conquered the top spot of the podium for gold medal in the Men’s 50m breast-stroke discipline, by submitting a time of 27.79 seconds. The Scottish swimmer earned fastest qualification spot in the final round, while he maintained his fastest berth
in the final round and reached the medal rostrum for the gold medal.
The 17-year-old Scottish champion was trailed by Tommy Sucipto of Australia, who remained 0.59 seconds behind him and followed him on the podium for the silver medal, with a timing of 28.38 seconds. The 16-year-old Sucipto was in a lead of 1.10 seconds over
his closest competitor, Omiros Zagkas of Cyprus, who secured the podium the bronze medal of the event by reporting in a time of 29.48 seconds.
In the meantime, Matthew Chen of Jamaica occupied the fourth fastest spot of the breast-stroke discipline, as he stayed 1.04 seconds slower than Zagkas and appeared on the wall with a timing of 30.52 seconds. Joshua Lewis of Guernsey remained only 0.73 seconds
behind his preceding swimmer and posted a time of 31.27 seconds for fifth position.
Meanwhile, the arena witnessed an admiring effort of Andrea Agius of Malta, who stayed only 0.48 seconds slower than Lewis and ended his swim in the sixth place, after he touched t he finishing wall and clocked a time of 31.75 seconds. The seventh fastest
spot of the swim was obtained by Giovanni Guarino of Jersey, who was only 0.07 seconds slower than his preceding swimmer and concluded his race with a timing of 31.82 seconds. Edward J Ilako of Kenya was the last swimmer of the single-lap race, as he ended
his swim to produce a time of 31.93 seconds.
Furthermore, the arena applauded for praiseworthy swims of all finalists, while the medal winners were called upon the medal rostrum for their immaculate swims after the session.
