Craig Calder clinches Men’s 200m breaststroke gold: Day three – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Craig Calder impressed his supporters by clinching gold medal of Men’s 200m breaststroke on third day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday, February 12.
Calder experienced a tough battle from Kazuki Kohinata and Nikolas Pregelj in the four-lap breaststroke event. He followed the lead of Kohinata in the first three laps of the race, but with his elevated efforts in the final round, he claimed gold medal of the event.
The first lap of the race was dominated by Pregelj, who reached the other end of the pool with an effort of 30.28 seconds. The 20-year-old Pregelj was chased by Kohinata, who stayed 0.44 seconds behind and ended his initial lap with an effort of 30.72 seconds. Calder remained considerably slower from his former swimmers and ended the equivalent distance with an effort of 31.06 seconds.
The tables turned in the second lap, where the 17-year-old Kohinata geared up his efforts and completed his first round in a fastest time of 1 minute and 04.29 seconds. He was trailed by Pregelj and Calder, who covered the same distance with timings of 1:04.39 and 1:04.83 minutes, respectively.
Kohinata continued his supremacy in the third lap, where he sustained his fastest spot by clocking 1 minute and 39.14 seconds on the board. He remained 0.15 seconds slower from Calder, who became second fastest swimmer by producing a time of 1 minute and 39.29 seconds while Pregelj ended his swim with an effort of 1 minute and 39.40 seconds.
The arena witnessed admirable efforts of Calder in the final lap, who sprinted his way towards the finishing end for gold medal by submitting 2 minutes and 13.87 seconds.
Subsequently, Kohinata secured silver medal of the race by reporting 2 minutes and 14.05 seconds on the bulletin board. He was trailed by Pregelj, who remained 1.04 seconds slower and finished his race with the timing of 2 minutes and 15.09 seconds for bronze medal.
The arena acknowledged remarkable efforts of all podium finishers in the 200m event whereas the session concluded after the completion of all scheduled events in Men and Women’s category.
