Craig Gentry talks about his infield home run as Texas Rangers qualify for the playoffs
The Texas Rangers managed to qualify for the playoffs after they beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3 on Friday, September 23 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The club needed to check the results on the Oakland and Los Angeles game before they could confirm the news as the Angels’ loss was the desired result required to qualify.
Their 5-3 win over the Mariners reduced their target for wins to one. When the Angels lost, that number went to zero. Craig Gentry was one of the reasons why the Rangers were on top on Friday. The centre-fielder was instrumental in powering the Rangers to
victory. The player not only gave his colleague and pitcher, Matt Harrison a few runs of cover as he provided the team with two important runs.
He was able to collect an in-field home-run when he lofted the ball to deep left and saw out-fielders Mike Carp and Trayvon Robinson squander the ball. Nelson Cruz, who has come back from injury, stopped on second base when the ball was falling down. He
quickly made a run for the home plate as soon as the baseball escaped the two fielders.
Gentry was not far behind as he paced himself well behind Cruz, to avoid a possible tag out, further in on the diamond. Nevertheless, with the ball dropped and rolling to the wall, the centre-fielder moved to score a home-run.
"I knew I couldn't round first real hard because I didn't want to run up on him," Gentry said. "Luckily, they weren't able to catch it. I stopped around first because I didn't know if he was going to make it around second. Once I hit second base, I knew
they were going to send me, so I tried to kick it into gear after then.”
Gentry and the rest of the hitting squad are looking good at the moment. That is something the club wants to see more of in the playoffs. The Rangers have achieved their goal as they put in a tremendous performance and beat the Mariners to get into the post-season.
