Craig Groenewald acquires Men’s 200m freestyle gold: Day seven - South African LC Nationals
Craig Groenewald of CGA-CG acquired gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle in the Multi-Class category of S14-S15 on seventh day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Sunday, April 22.
The 33-year-old Groenewald smothered hopes of his challengers by snaring the title of the 200m discipline in a comfortable manner.
With his splendid performance, he remained considerably ahead of his challengers and reached the finishing end for gold medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 04.79 seconds.
His gruelling effort was trailed by his teammate, Challis Wright, who remained nearly five seconds slower from his former finisher and settled on the finishing blockade for silver medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 09.20 seconds.
The third spot of the race was secured by Sipho Mjoka of KZNA-KZ, who completed his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 18.66 seconds.
Mjoka enjoyed an advantage of 0.27 seconds over Ray de Freitas of MP-MP, who proved his eligibility for fourth fastest spot of the event by hitting the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 18.93 seconds.
In the meantime, Daniel Dias occupied gold medal of the men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) in the Multi-Class category of S1-S13. The 23-year-old Dias occupied gold medal of the discipline by posting a time of 2 minutes and 50.47 seconds.
His title-claiming effort was followed by Charl Bouwer of WPA-WP, who seized silver medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 14.50 seconds.
Bouwer was chased by Kevin F Paul of EP-EP, who remained nearly three seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 17.96 seconds for bronze medal.
Achmat Hassiem emerged as the fourth position holder of the discipline as he ended his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 29.22 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all planned events while the position holders were called upon the victory stand for medals at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
