Craig Groenewald clinches Men’s 100m butterfly gold: Day five - South African LC Nationals
Craig Groenewald of CGA-CG clinched gold medal of Men’s 100m butterfly in the Multi-Class category of S14-S15 on day five of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Friday, April 20.
The 33-year-old Groenewald stayed in a prominent lead over his challengers throughout the double lap event. With his remarkable struggle, he outsmarted his opponents and sprinted his way towards the finishing end for gold medal.
Groenewald proved his mettle for the gold spot of the 100m discipline as he touched the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 04.55 seconds.
The 33-year-old Groenewald was trailed by Challis Wright, who followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by hitting the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 05.09 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Ethan M Paulse of WPA-WP, who stayed nearly three seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 08.81 seconds for bronze medal.
The 16-year-old Paulse was chased by Sipho Mjoka of KZNA-KZ, who stayed nearly one second slower from the third position holder and surfaced on the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 09.75 seconds for fourth position.
The 23-year-old Mjoka was trailed by his teammate, Avron Manchest, who occupied fifth finest spot of the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 10.23 seconds.
The 16-year-old Manchest was chased by Valentino Vergotine, who remained almost four seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and transpired on the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 14.61 seconds for sixth position.
On the other hand, Charl Bouwer of WPA-WP seized gold medal of the Men’s 100m butterfly in the Multi-Class S1-S13 category. The 22-year-old Bouwer occupied gold medal of the event with the timing of 58.78 seconds.
He was followed by his only competitor and his team-member, Achmat Hassiem, who finished second with the timing of 58.79 seconds.
In addition, the session came to an end after the completion of all swimming events in Men and Women’s category.
