Craig Groenewald earns Men’s 100m breaststroke title: Day two - South African LC Nationals
Craig Groenewald of CGA-CG earned gold medal of the Men’s 100m breaststroke on day two of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Tuesday, April 17.
The 33-year-old Groenewald, who qualified into the final as third best swimmer, went full throttle in the playoff and snatched the title of the event.
With his immaculate efforts and stupendous stroke, he remained prominently ahead of his challengers from the start of the race and reached the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 14.80 seconds.
His title-claiming effort remained nearly 1.20 seconds faster from his team-member, Challis Wright, who followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 16.02 seconds.
The bronze medal of the discipline was secured by Sipho Mjoka of KZNA-KZ, who stayed nearly five seconds slower from his former finisher and emerged on the finishing blockade with an effort of 1 minute and 21.09 seconds.
The 23-year-old Mjoka was chased by Valentino Vergotine, who stayed nearly two seconds behind him and finished his swim in fourth place by clocking a time of 1 minute and 23.65 seconds.
Next was the equivalent event in Men’s S1-S13 Multi-Class category, where Kevin F Paul of EP-EP upset his competitors and seized gold medal of the event by producing a time of 1 minute and 05.94 seconds.
His immaculate effort remained nearly half a minute ahead of his following swimmer, Daniel Dias of BRA-ZZ, who settled on the victory stand for silver medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 39.36 seconds.
The 23-year-old Dias was chased by Tadhg Slattery of CGA-CG, who finished third in the two-lap event as he tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 40.70 seconds.
The bronze medallist was trailed by Hendrik van der Merwe, who remained nearly three seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 43.84 seconds.
In addition, the position holders were invited on the victory stand for their notable accomplishments after the session.
