Craig Lee leads the suspended second round of the Madeira Islands Open – Golf News
Scotland’s Craig Lee fired a four-under par 68 in the second round of the Madeira Islands Open to take a one-stroke lead over Peter Uihlein, before the bad light forced the game to suspend on Friday, May 17,
2013.
According to the tournament officials, the second round will resume at 8:00 am Saturday. At the same time, the third round will start no later than 9:30 am.
Starting on the 10th hole, Lee birdied the 11th, 16th and the 18th hole to reach the turn in three under. The back nine of the course witnessed him adding another two shots to his scorecard, while conceding a
single bogey, which allowed him to enter the weekend with a strong position on the leaderboard.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, the Scot said that the playing conditions at the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra course were really difficult and creating birdie chances was not an easy task.
In the meantime, he also expressed his pleasure in taking the driving seat to secure the maiden European Tour title victory of his career.
“It was very tricky out there,” Lee said. “Early doors it was pretty cold and then the fog came down and there was a delay so it was pretty hard to focus and get back into it again, but I managed to do that.”
“I managed to get my distance control right with a lot of my wedge shots and that’s key here, so that set me up for some regulation birdies and that was nice,” he added. “It’s so difficult with the wind and the
cold, it’s all making a difference. It’s tough mentally so I'm delighted with the score.”
Lloyd Saltman, the overnight leader, faltered in the second round for a three-over par 75, to slip down to the eighth position on the leaderboard.
Saltman played amazingly well in the opening round, as he posted a decent eight-under par 62 on Thursday. However, he failed to maintain consistency in his game and conceded six bogeys and a double bogey on day
two, to finish four strokes behind Lee.
