Craig McDermott appointed Australian bowling coach: Cricket News
Australia appointed Craig McDermott, the former pace-ace, as their new bowling coach. The 46-year-old, who snared 291 victims in 71 test matches, replaced Trevor Cooley who left the job at the start of the year. The right-arm fast
bowler, McDermott, was the linchpin of the Aussie attack in the late 80s through to mid 90s. He was regarded as a genuine fast bowler who had the ability to swing the ball at a high pace besides ruffling the batsmen with his sharp bounce.
Australia was on the look-out for a replacement for Cooley and McDermott was most likely to take over despite the reports that former South African pacer and New Zealand’s bowling Coach Allan Donald was in the reckoning. It was McDermott
who got the nod at the end and the fiery fast bowler stated that he was delighted to be a part of the new Australian team management that is aiming to re-build the team after a disastrous Ashes and a disappointing World Cup under the leadership of Ricky Ponting.
"It's great to be back as part of the Australian team set-up again and I can't wait to get started working with the bowlers and the rest of the team," McDermott said. "We've got some challenging tours ahead in the coming months but
I'm excited at the opportunity to be part of the group that helps get http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 back to number one in all forms of cricket."
Since the World Cup, Ponting has given up on captaincy. His replacement Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
Mc Dermott’s appointment is the latest shuffle made in the team management. The Queenslander had stints of coaching at various levels since his retirement from international cricket at the start of 1996. However, he has not done a
coaching job for a long period.
He was regarded as one of the fiercest competitors for the Australian team of his era led by Allan Border and Mark http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755. In the semi-finals he broke the back
of the Pakistani batting line-up to stun the hot favourites in their own backyard in Lahore.
In 138 ODI appearances he took 203 wickets, and many believe that he was the best limited overs bowler in the late 80s.
Leading Australian pace-man, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brett-Lee-c48419, has expressed his delight at McDermott’s appointment. He thinks that the veteran has a lot to offer to Australian cricket.
"The work Craig's done over the last couple of days with the guys has been great," Brett Lee told media during the Bangladesh tour. "He's been a world-class bowler for Australia and his record speaks for itself. He gets on well with
the guys."
McDermott was part of the new cricket academy set up by the Australian Cricket Board, he was serving as a pace bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane before his appointment this morning.
Meanwhile Cricket Australia has re-appointed former batting great Justin Langer as the batting coach. The Western Australian, who played more than 100 tests for his country, has been given a year’s extension as both the governing body
of the game in the country and Langer himself were keen to him stay.
Australian players, who are not taking part in the Indian Premier League, are currently enjoying their time off from the game. The squad is set to re-group at the end of next month before the team starts its preparations for the tour
