http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Craig-John-McDermott-c51704 looking forward to Ireland coaching challenge – Cricket News Update
Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 this month, has expressed his eagerness
at working with the Irish team.
“I am looking forward to working with Phil and his team at the World T20 in Sri Lanka. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 has done well in the past World Cups and I am sure they will do again at this one,” McDermott said.
“They have a well balance squad and I am looking forward to getting stuck into preparing them for the World T20 in our training camp in Colombo,” he went on to add. “I see this as another opportunity for me to work with another international team and to
further my coaching career.”
Counted among the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745, Ireland (who have played a total of 28 T20s) have performed valiantly in the last two ICC World T20 events, but failed to make a significant mark on the tournament.
The 2009 edition saw them winning all of their matches during the 2008-2009 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers. Their first match in the main event, against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747, also resulted in victory (by 6 wickets), but they followed that up with 4 successive defeats
– against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 – which led to their exit from the tournament.
The 2009-10 event held a similar fate for the Irish, as they lost their first match to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 which ended with no result.
With increased experience, and after having won all of their 2011-2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier matches in March this year, the team is likely to be boosted in a major way during the upcoming event by the expertise of McDermott.
The 47-year-old, who started out as a paceman for Australia, was counted among the team’s most prominent strike bowlers during the 1990’s, but struggles with numerous injuries forced him to call time on a career that had spanned 71 Tests and 138 ODIs.
He was appointed Australia’s bowling coach in May 2011 after the exit of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Iftikhar-Ali-Khan-Pataudi-Nawab-of-c64075 Cummins.
He retired from the post in May this year, owing to an overloaded international schedule and family commitments, and has since been snapped up by Cricket Ireland.
McDermott will be coaching their team during a pre-tournament training camp in Colombo prior to the T20 World Cup and during the tournament. His knowledge and experience with the Aussie team is bound to come in handy as Ireland face off against Australia
during their first World T20 match, due to be played on September 19 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
