Craig Pollock prepares for 2013 season return with V4 engines – Formula 1 Update
Former Formula 1 team, British American Racing Principal, Craig Pollock, aims a Formula 1 return in the 2013 season with 1.6 litres V4 engines. Pollock said that his company, PURE (Propulsion Universelle et Recuperation d'Energie), will supply cheap and
efficient V4 engines to Formula 1 teams, in the 2013 season.
Pollock seemed confident about his V4 machine success and said, “The vision for PURE is to be a leader in the development of the next generation power train technology which must respond to the demands for a cleaner environment. The 2013 F1 power train regulation
changes offer PURE an immediate platform to field test and validate future technologies.”
He further added that the V4 technology will be environmentally safer than the present V8 engines.
Pollock, while explaining more about the project, said, “Mecachrome will be putting together, manufacturing and constructing the engines - fabricating them. The development is being done by TEOS, IFP and D2T. So we are a very tight team, and being tight
means that our costs are an awful lot lower - and that means we should be able to carry over this cost reduction to teams and give them a cost-effective power train.”
Pollock has added fuel to the V4 issue which started when FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) Boss, Jean Todt, stated that V4’s will be used from the 2013 season. Soon after Todt’s V4 comment, Formula 1’s Supremo, Bernie Ecclestone stated that
V4’s will kill the sport by compromising the noise of the engines.
Jean Todt’s concept of V4 aimed to cut the cost of the sport and bring more greener and environmental friendly engines. On the other hand, Bernie said that Formula 1 is not a sport for smaller teams and work should be done to make V8’s more environmental
friendly, rather than moving on to V4’s.
The decision from Pollock to start an industry to manufacture V4’s has been pro-active, as final talks about V4 engines are still wide open. A number of Formula 1 teams have also taken side on the V4 issue and are hopeful that a decision will be finalised
when major Formula 1 teams sit in Stuttgart, next weekend.
For now, Pollock’s company PURE is the only V4 supplier in Formula 1 and if some resolution on the V4 is agreed on, the Principal is surely in for big business.
The 2011 season is set to continue in Turkey on May 8, with the fourth Grand Prix of the season. The race will be contested on V8 machines. On the other hand, all eyes will be on the meeting to be held in Germany, for a decision on the future of Formula
1 sport.
