Cramping forces Washington Nationals’ Jayson Werth to depart field against St. Louis Cardinals-MLB
Washington Nationals’ outfielder Jayson Werth left the field on Saturday during the game against the St. Louis Cardinals late in the match. It has been reported that the hot and humid weather may have taken its toll on him as he was cramping and lacking
the energy to keep going.
Werth has shunned the impression that it is serious by saying the cramping will not hamper his expedition in the season.
The fact Werth has not played on Sunday in the last match of the series against the Cardinals raises doubts about whether he has been affected by the cramping more than it has been believed.
As in the last game, Eury Perez played in his place and occupied centre field in Sunday’s match.
Meanwhile, Perez will be trying to capitalise on the opportunity of playing at the Major League level in his absence. By showing power on the plate and making fine defensive plays he can earn the attention of the management for the future.
As far as the manager Davey Johnson is concerned, Werth was called back in the game because he did not want to risk a long-term injury of the outfielder.
Given the kind of power Werth showed on the plate ever since he made his entry into the season from a broken wrist injury, he holds immense significance for the team’s offence for the upcoming games.
Therefore it can be realised why the management is giving him proper time to recover and return when he feels at his best. To this effect, it is not hard to understand why he sat out on Sunday.
Werth states he has not suffered cramping in the last four to five years and is hopeful that it will not turn out to be a big problem for him this time.
“It’s been four, five years since I cramped up during a game,” Werth said. “Hopefully it’s just that, and no big deal.”
Along with Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman, Werth plays an important role in helping the Nationals experience high scoring games. Therefore the management will be hoping that he comes back at the earliest and steers the team’s offence.
