  1. If you bet $5 on the pass line you win $5 plus you get to keep your $5 if you win.

Also by betting $5 on the pass line you then get to take odds after the come out throw. Odds are a multiplier of the pass line bet. At bad casinos in you might get 2x,odds meaning you can place an additional $10 wager. At good casinos you get better odds with the highest I've seen being 100x. The advantage of an odds bet is that the house has no advantage on this wager making it the only wager in a house game with no house advantage.

  2. simply put a 1:1 means you get a fiver with your fiver for a total of $10, or simply for every $1 you bet they pay you $1. Now if the odds were say 7:1 for every $1 you bet you'd get $7.

  3. Craps is a bit complicated.  If the "point" hasn't been rolled yet, then you can bet on Pass or Don't Pass before the dice "shooter" rolls the "come-out" roll to start the craps game.  A dice roll of 7 or 11 on the come-out role pays 1:1 on the Pass line (meaning you bet $5, you get paid $5, and you don't lose your original $5 bet).  A craps dice roll on the come-out roll (2, 3, 12) will pay 1:1 on the Don't Pass line.  Additionally, you can also play craps while the "point" is on.  The "point" will be whatever the dice roll was when it wasn't craps, 7, or 11.  Let's say it was a 6.  The point is now 6, and the craps game is live.  Depending on the table odds, the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 pays different payouts.  You can now place a bet behind your Pass line bet, which means if the dice roll is the point (6), then you win your bet on the Pass line and your bet behind the Pass line.  Any bets you may have placed on the other numbers (besides 6, which is the point number) will stay there until the next "point" is declared.  Any dice roll of 7 means during a live craps game means all bets are lost.  However, if you had bet on Don't Pass before the point was declared, then when a 7 is rolled, you will win your bet on the Don't Pass line.  You cannot, however play both Pass and Don't Pass at the same time.  You also cannot bet on Pass or Don't Pass once the point already has been declared.  It really helps to just hang around and watch the game at a craps table.  You'll see what's going on and get a clearer picture.

  4. The second answer is incorrect, you can place a bet on the pass line at any time.  However, once the point is established, the advantage you had on the passline is gone.  If point is established, place the bet on the number, payout is the same. eg  point is 6.   $5 on the passline, $25 odds bet behind, if you hit  even money on the passline, $30 behind the line.  Total payout is $35 from the $30 investment.  Place $30 on the 6, payout is $35   6:5 odds  Vegas 3X4X5X odds.
