What is the appropriate thing to say if I want to bet the Buy on the 4,5,6,8,9,10? Isn't there a easy way to say it besides saying them off. Like bet the buy across the board or something. thank you. Please know forsure. Just to clarify -don't usually play craps- when I write buy meaning I'm betting it is going to roll before the 7. Thank You

  1. The first thing you need to understand is that there are two different ways to bet those numbers are going to roll before a 7.

"Buy" bets pay true odds on the bet itself, but you are charged a 5% vigorish (fee) when you make the bet. The exact rules for calculating this vary depending upon the casino. Usually they round down to the nearest dollar, so a $39 bet would cost you a $1 vigorish, while a $40 bet would cost you a $2 vigorish. It used to be there were some casinos that only charged the vigorish when the buy bet won, but that was years ago and I have no idea if there are any still charging that way.

"Place" bets pay less than true odds but there is no charge for making the bet. Place bets pay 9 to 5 for a 4 or 10, 7 to 5 for a 5 or 9, and 7 to 6 for a 6 or 8. Consequently you always want your bets on 4,5,9 and 10 to be multiples of $5, an you want to bet multiples of $6 of 6 and 8.

For simplicity I will only discuss place bets since they tend to give you better odds unless you are betting on the 4 or 10.

If you walk up to a table and give the dealer $32 in chips and tell him "place 32 across" he will make place bets of $5 on the 4,5,9, and 10 and place bets of $6 on the 6 and 8. Any multiple of 32 will be handled the same way.

Commonly players who have a pass line bet will want to place all the numbers except the pass line point. If you had a pass line bet and the come out roll was a six, you could give the dealer $26 in chips and tell him "place $26 across" and he would undertand you want place bets on all the numbers except the six.

Don't worry about making a mistake. If the dealer is not sure what you mean, or if the amount you give him does not work out correctly, he will clarify the bet with you.

  3. FYI, you should never be buying any numbers except the 4 and 10. You should be making place bets on the 5, 6, 8 and 9.

The house edge on the buy bet for any number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) is 4.7%. The house edge for the place bet on the 4 or 10 is 6.67%, so buying is the better play. The house edge for the place bet on the 5 or 9 is 4%, and the house edge for placing the 6 or 8 is 1.52%, so placing those numbers is the better play.

The only exception to this is if you're playing at a casino where they only make you pay the vig if you win. At those casinos, you should also buy the 5 and 9. You should never, ever buy the 6 or 8.
