Question:

Crate size - Should I get it for puppy or full grown?

I'm adopting a puppy in a month or so (just preparing now) and didn't know whether I should get a smaller crate for it while it is just a puppy seeing as I doubt I'll use it while it is older, or whether I should just go ahead and buy the larger size? The puppy will probably be around 10 pounds and grow to be anywhere from 40-70 I think. It's a mutt so I can't really tell you for sure. I'm not getting the crate until right before I will bring her home but I'm just trying to get an idea of what to do now. Any suggestions?

  1. i would get a large one for when it grows up, and they have dividers to make it smaller so that as the puppy grows you can expand it. Also at some petco's they have a thing where you can exchange your crates as the puppy grows and get they next size cheaper.

  2. Go for the bigger one.  If you get a small one, once your pup outgrows it, no more use for it.  Get the bigger one and if you ever need it, it will be there. Example, traveling, dog gets sick or injured and you have to keep it quiet, etc.

  3. I borrowed a small crate for my puppy...she only used the small size for about a day!  Then, I got a large crate that will fit her through adulthood.  We will always use it...a dog needs a den.

  4. i would definatly get a full size because your puppy will for sure grow and when he is a puppy he will want some room to play around in until he gets a litle more mature and can sit still unlike my 5 year old dauchsund.. :D

  5. congratulations on your decision to adopt a dog.  best of luck to the both of you.  they sell crates that have a removable divider in them so when the pup grows, you can remove the divider.  best to you both :)

  6. My puppy's crate is for a large dog & she's just a small pup (8 lbs)

I want her to have room to move around in there & I only use it when I'm not home.

  7. get it for a full grown that way it has room to walk and when it gets bigger it will still fit in  it and u wont have to spend more money to get another one

  8. I would get a very large crate, with a divider.  Your puppy will get bigger, by the time she is 1, she will be close to full grown, yet probably still in the chewing phase and puppy... therefore you might still want to crate her while you are gone, especially for long periods of time. plus some dogs find it as a 'sanctuary' and like their kennel, even when they are adults, you could leave the door open, and they could go as they please.  While she is small though, you want a smaller space, so she learns not to 'go potty' in the crate, the smaller the space, the less likely she will be to use the restroom, dogs don't want to sit in their f***s or urine either! lol! This will assist w/ training her! Good luck, and congrats!

  9. get one that you can ajust the size it shoul give him just enough space to turn around in but not take more than 2 big steps...the reason for being so small is that they will hold their bladder because they never go poo poo or pipi where they sleep...this will help train him to wait for you to take him out after he wakes up from a nap.

eventually when he gets tired he will go in his cage all by himself =]

just like my 2 month old beagle puppy...Mr.Wafflez =]

  10. Get a crate that is big enough for the dog at full grown. Make sure it has a divider. Walmart sells large and medium crates that come with a divider so you can adjust it as your dog grows. Crates are usefull for transporting your dog.
