Question:

Craters???

Since the number of craters differs drastically between objects....

What are some reasons that there are not very many craters on the Earth? Describe the cratering on the Moon—is there a uniform amount of craters all over the surface, or does the amount of cratering vary in different places?

What does the amount of craters tell us about the age of the surface of the Moon, for example? How does the age of the surface of the Moon compare to the age of the surface of the Earth?

  1. Erosion

  2. there about 180 huge craters on earth all of which could have cause catestrophe desaster and craters hit on average every 60 million years

  3. There are many crater remnants on Earth, craters that have eroded away but are still detectable. Many other craters have probably vanished entirely, due to erosive and tectonic processes. The lunar far side appears more heavily cratered than the near side does, probably due at least in part to the near side having been sheltered by the bulk of the Earth. I'm afraid I know very little about the age of the moon's surface.

  4. 1.  wind erosion on Earth but not the moon

    2.  water erosion on Earth but not the moon

    3.  protection by an atmosphere on the Earth but not the moon

    4.  Something heading towards Earth would likely encounter the moon first.

  5. Hi,

I Have a question, could you have a look please?

I noticed in your profile that you might be able to help.

I realise I'm being cheeky by asking you here, so if you are irritated please ignore!

  6. This sounds a lot like homework to me...

The moon is dead - that is it does not have plate tectonics and so there aren't the terrestrial geologic processes going on the constantly re-surface the earth.

Add into that atmospheric/water-related/weathering processes and it should be pretty obvious...
