  1. Cravings are often your body telling you it needs something - and I always listen to my cravings. But protein cravings may be different - might be more about taste cravings:

Unlike carbohydrate cravings, which may be related to the need for a psychological pickup, cravings for foods that are high in protein or specific vitamins and minerals suggest that taste mechanisms may sometimes correct nutritional deficiencies.

In studies conducted by Dr. Claire Murphy, associate professor of psychology at San Diego State University, people who were slightly protein deficient preferred soups high in protein. ''I suspect that they liked the taste better because their body needed it,'' she says.

Where there is an adequate food supply, people will select about 15 percent of their food as protein, according to Dr. G. Harvey Anderson, chairman of the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto medical school. Yet protein needs may vary among individuals.

One study at the University of Toronto showed that identical twins reared separately ate identical amounts of proteins and carbohydrates, whereas fraternal twins did not. ''That implies a fundamental genetic regulation,'' Dr. Anderson says.

  2. Craving occur because of too few carbohydrates (which are the primary source of energy for our body), not becuase of small amounts of proteins.

  3. yes, if you do not eat adequate carbs or protein you get cravings. 25 per cent of your intake should be devoted to each.
