Crawl space as tornado shelter?

I have a high crawl under my house. It is high enough to comfortably stand up in but it is not technically a basement. Is it safe to use as a tornado shelter?

  1. The idea is that the place you are hiding doesn't get blown away.   If you crawl space is located at the bottom floor and has solid cement or a lot of pipes,  then that is pretty secure.

But a crawl in an attic would probably not be.

  2. Not until you wrap a corner of it with 12 inches of reinforced concrete. Otherwise, the whole house might collapse on top of you.
