It's WE the CONSUMERS who continue to buy gas at those ridiculous prices.

Middle East, America's addiction to oil.

The demand is high, so the Middle East knows this. They do not run their refineries at full capacity, so it looks like a shortage. Speculators make the situation look the way it is, as well. They can price it however they feel like, knowing our addiction.

Number 1 oil consuming nation is USA 20,588,000 bbl/day.

Number 2 oil consuming nation is China 7,274,000 bbl/day.

Number 3 oil consuming nation is Japan 5,222,000 bbl/day

So a lot of demand from the USA.
