I just got a 22 yr old mare. For the past 2 days when I get her from the pasture she seems to be vomitting. She will be fine then she water/food will run out of her mouth. I don't know if she is just collecting water or what. Craziest thing I have ever seen. It's not like she's drooling either.

  1. Horses cannot physically vomit, so my best advice to you is to consult a verterinarian on your horses behavior, if it continues. Best of luck.

  2. no it is impossible. GET A VET OUT IMMEDIATELY!!

  3. horses can't vomit, infact, it is impossible for them to vomit... try calling yr vet

  4. No, horses cannot and do not vomit.

  5. Horses carnt vomit!

  6. horses dont vomit.some will use water to wash out their mouth and throat of residual food and mostly wait till they are next to you to release it.

  7. no, horses CANNOT vomit. that's why they get so many stomach problems

  8. No, horses can't vomit.... When was the last time this mare had her teeth floated?  It kinda sounds like it may be time again..

  9. Horses can't vommit...

She may need her teeth floated...

Also at her age, she might not have a lot of teeth to chew her hay/feed so you might want to start soaking her feed in water before giving it to her...

  10. It is actually impossible for a horse to vomit. You might need to get her teeth floated.

  11. Horses cannot vomit.  If they could, there would be a lot less colic cases.  It soulds like she is having a problem chewing. Have her teeth checked.

  12. No horses can not vomit. It sounds like your mare may have a choke. Something, usually a wad of grass, gets stuck in their esophagus. Its an obstruction and you need to get a vet out there. If it was going to resolve itself, I think it would have by now, plus your mare is 22, I don't know if you know her medical history, but I really think she needs to see the vet. Good luck

  13. This isn't vomit, it's choke.  Or a problem with the esophagus, where she doesn't get everything all the way down.  If she's ok after the water and food comes up, its probably something wrong with her esophagus, teeth, or mouth.  You probably need a vet to look at her.

Horses don't vomit in the sense that people do, but a horse with a severe, severe colic can actually appear to.  If there's an impaction, whatever's stuck in the stomach will ferment and make gas, which has no where to go but up.  It'll take the stomach contents back up with it, which will flow out the mouth and sometimes the nose.  You can tell the difference between this and choke by the aroma - choke smells like food, colic smells like stomach acid/gas (bad).  This is a life threatening emergency that needs a vet immediately.  Just to be clear - your horse does NOT have this; she'd be dead by now.

  14. No, they cannot vomit.

When a horse needs its teeth floated, food and hay can fall out of their mouth because it hurts them to chew. Ask a vet to come look at her teeth. Also if she seems to be loosing weight that is another sign her teeth might need some work.

    Good luck!

  15. No they don't . they have no ability to bring anything up from there gut. They can cough but not vomit..Check in her mouth she might have something in her mouth that is irritating it like a sticker or something she has picked up from pasture

  16. Horses cannot vomit!

She'll probably need her teeth rasping, call the vet or the horse dentist :)

Especially with her getting on abit her teeth might not be as good as they used to be!

    xx

  17. hores cant vomit, they just cant.

i dont know what is going on with your maare but i was toled by the staff at hartputry and my vet that horses cant vomit!

  18. We have a really old mare who does the same thing you've described.

    It's not vomiting.

It happens when they eat a lot of clover, and that stimulates the saliva glands to over-produce. It smells really bad, too.

If the problem hasn't been sudden, though, and built up over time, she may need to have her teeth floated.

  19. No. Horses don't puke. i rode this really old horse too and he would get grass and water built up in between his gums and cheek. It was gross. The vet said something about him not salivating enough and that he sould eat more grass. I dunno. i would talk to your vet before you do ANYTHING!

  20. Horses cannot vomit. Your mare may need her teeth floated (filed). At her age she may be lacking the teeth needed to chew her food. Ask your vet for further help if these are not the answers.
