  1. Before you start to solicit funds you need to meet the requirements for the type of organization you want to start, and register with the IRS for tax-exempt status.  It can be a time-consuming procedure, but it really is not too complicated, and you should be able to work it through yourself.  You can also take a look at The Foundation Center http://foundationcenter.org for more detailed information on how to start  your org (look under faqs/getting started) and how to find funders.

  2. Hi,

There are many ways to market a small business on the web.  You can buy banner ads, text links, or use PPC.  However, the best way is to get listed in a bunch of portals. Portals and directories are like phone books, and they often provide a lot of traffic because they tend to rank high on Google.

This portal is giving away a free business card holder for lising your business (I got mine a few days ago in the mail).  If you want to know about some other portals, just let me know.

  3. First thing you do is create a name. Next thing is decide if you want to be a corporation, LLC, etc. After you know the answers to those, go to IRS.gov and get your EIN. It's free and takes less than 60 seconds. It's your companies new social security number so to speak.

Once you have your EIN it's time to file your 501 c3 application. You have to send around $400 for the app fee and it takes up to 12 months to complete your application. The app is also at IRS.gov. There are two other forms I had to submit but I dont remember which IRS forms they were. They do want your company mission statement to accompany the app.

Also it is VERY important that once you get your 501c3 that you register in your state as a non-profit. Failure to do so can lead to jail time for felony solicitation and fraud.
