In biology, evolution is the process of change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms from one generation to the next. The genes that are passed on to an organism's offspring produce the inherited traits that are the basis of evolution. Mutations in genes can produce new or altered traits in individuals, resulting in the appearance of heritable differences between organisms, but new traits also come from the transfer of genes between populations, as in migration, or between species, in horizontal gene transfer. In species that reproduce sexually, new combinations of genes are produced by genetic recombination, which can increase the variation in traits between organisms. Evolution occurs when these heritable differences become more common or rare in a population.

There are two major mechanisms driving evolution. The first is natural selection, which is a process causing heritable traits that are helpful for survival and reproduction to become more common in a population, and harmful traits to become more rare. This occurs because individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce successfully, so that more individuals in the next generation inherit these traits.[1][2] Over many generations, adaptations occur through a combination of successive, small, random changes in traits, and natural selection of those variants best-suited for their environment.[3] In contrast, genetic drift produces random changes in the frequency of traits in a population. Genetic drift results from the role chance plays in whether a given individual will survive and reproduce. Though the changes produced in any one generation by drift and selection are small, differences accumulate with each subsequent generation and can, over time, cause substantial changes in the organisms.

One definition of a species is a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another and produce fertile offspring. When a species is separated into populations that are prevented from interbreeding, mutations, genetic drift, and natural selection cause the accumulation of differences over generations and the emergence of new species.[4] The similarities between organisms suggest that all known species are descended from a common ancestor (or ancestral gene pool) through this process of gradual divergence.[1]

Evolutionary biology documents the fact that evolution occurs, and also develops and tests theories that explain why it occurs. Studies of the fossil record and the diversity of living organisms had convinced most scientists by the mid-nineteenth century that species changed over time.[5][6] However, the mechanism driving these changes remained unclear until the 1859 publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, detailing the theory of evolution by natural selection.[7] Darwin's work soon led to overwhelming acceptance of evolution within the scientific community.[8][9][10][11] In the 1930s, Darwinian natural selection was combined with Mendelian inheritance to form the modern evolutionary synthesis,[12] in which the connection between the units of evolution (genes) and the mechanism of evolution (natural selection) was made. This powerful explanatory and predictive theory directs research by constantly raising new questions, and it has become the central organizing principle of modern biology, providing a unifying explanation for the diversity of life on Earth.

  1. I have to say I think some of the dumbest people take one side or the other on this debate without using sense !

To the creationists : How was Moses in the Bible expected to explain the reason why we're here other than through semireligious themes. Religion was the science of its time, the intellectuals reasoned it all out. His account in genesis has all the hallmarks of current science theory..let there be light(Big bang)...without form( no planets formed)...the animals come first then man...the principle of a small number of people founding humanity. Sure this is evolution described by stoneage man using the state of technology. Wake up...evolution is real. Yes there is a God but he/she works through the laws of this universe- that's why bad things happen to good people. Religion is only a glimpse of God ....but by formulating doctrine you're laying ownership claims on God  and driving people away from God.

To the Scientists: You're the new God of the gaps I'm afraid, knowing about 1 % of the story still but spoofing the other 99% from what you know . Evolutionary molecular Genetics is as much pseudoscience as speculating about Methusala's age . Evolution is for real but you've only scratched the surface of diversity and frankly a lot of the genetic analysis is pure sophistry backed up by your colleagues and silly pearl programs.

Don't forget what we all don't know- possibilities such as the multiverse of quantum mechanics with different rule universes. None of this proves/disproves God. No one can.

Just think how our philosophies would change if bacteria were found on Mars.... would our religions accept that life could exist all over the universe with different beliefs, different sciences and philosophies..........would our scientists ?

We live in interesting times. accept the truth( evolution) but don't discount a god existing at the root of it all acting through physics:)

  2. Basically, people who would be in this section believe in evolution but there are some some who don't believe which doesn't make sense to me why they are in this section. I suppose like atheist in the religion section making the world a little strange. The answer is evolution is correct but maybe not all the details but it doesn't cancel out truth in the BIble or God.

  3. Creation

  4. That's not really a question, though you'll get a lot of answers from people who didn't read what you wrote.

It is a very good essay, if you did it for a class you'll get good marks and it's accurate.

  5. Everyone agrees that Natural Selection occurs. That is not controversial.

(Goo to you) evolution is the hypothesis that animals can change into different kinds of animals by means of natural selection working on genetic mutations.

These alleged mutations need to have added vast amounts of genetic information. However no such genetic mutation has ever been observed. Mutations are information neutral or lossy.

'But E is too slow to see' protest the Eists. Well then it's not observable and not worthy of being even called a theory. In any case, time is the enemy - mutations are resulting in the degradation of the gene pool - that is observable.

Many evolutionists (deliberately?) mislead people by calling NS evolution and then claiming E is proved.

This is exactly what you do above.

So instead of quoting some textbook - start using your brain and question what people are claiming without evidence!

  6. In my view, as a Christian, Natural Selection and Survival of the fittest can't be true, because then Adolf Hitler and other could be justified. And then I could get a gun and start shooting people all around me and stay alive, and you can't tell me that that's wrong, according to your theory.

Now, my understanding of Evolution from what I've learned about it is explained in this picture: http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/8105/...

That at one point, there was a split in the Human/Ape gene or whatever you wanna call the ancestors, Sapiens or Homos whatever. But that is as far as science goes. What caused this split?

Many Christians believe that God created Evolution, and that might be true, in that sense, but to me, I don't wanna worry about it and spend my entire life researching because I know my God.

That's why it's, to this day although a lot of people believe, is called the "Theory of Evolution" cause it hasn't been proven yet.

Now, if God did created evolution, that even with that, Survival of the fittest can not be justified because humans are all created in God's image. That's why in Genesis he separated us from animals and created us Male, and Female, according to HIS image.

I will agree with the person above me, on the notion that God is at the root, however, going deeper into that subject will raise a lot of theological issues!

I'm always open to learn so I welcome other opinions, and you could always email me to talk about this topic!

  7. While I am sure evolution is a correct theory based on facts, I suspect it will never be 100% correct. We will always find mistakes in our methodolgy & investigations, but when we find the evidence these mistakes will be corrected. We are not restricted by dogma, superstition or mythology as are creationists.

  8. Natural selection can never be argued against. But evolution has never actually been observed. It's like taking 1% of the pieces from a puzzle, arranging them randomly on the floor so that none of them are touching and saying "look I've completed the puzzle, theres just a few pieces missing, but I still know what it is." Its ludicrous. I do agree that mutations have been observed, but they never seem to turn into a positive for a species and so they don't stay around for to long. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no evidence at ALL, just theories and possibilities. And it most certainly doesn't provide a "unififying explaination for the diversity of life on Earth".
