Creative Cause and Teeth of the Dog finalised for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico
The 3-year-old Heinz Steinmann owned colt, Creative Cause, is expected to be on a flight that takes off from California and makes a stop at Louisville to pick up horses that are expected to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico race
course and completes its journey at Baltimore on 16 May, 2012.
The Preakness Stakes is scheduled to go underway on 19 May, 2012, and Creative Cause after his fifth place finish in the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on 5 May, has an automatic berth in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
Pretty well seasoned colt, Creative Cause, under the training of Mike Harrington never finished worse than third in his eight starts before his Derby run, and in the process he nabbed 3 graded stakes wins, including a grade 1 win as a juvenile.
After his fifth place finish in the Derby, Creative Cause was shipped back to his home base in California, and now he is scheduled to make a trip to Baltimore in the coming week.
"We're planning on it; we've got the flight booked," Harrington said. "We have to see how he bounces back."
On the other hand, a non Derby participant has been finalised for a run in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. Trained by Michael Matz for owner J. W. Singer, Teeth of the Dog, who was earlier pointed toward the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park, will now
start in the Preakness Stakes.
Bred in Kentucky by Royal Pegasus LLC, Teeth of the Dog is a 3-year-old Bluegrass Cat colt, out of Deputy Minister mare Deputy Reality.
The colt broke his maiden at third asking going 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park’s dirt track, while he made his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, where he turned in a solid performance, finished third to winner, Gemologist.
"He came out of the Wood fine and has done well," said trainer Michael Matz.
Matz, who also trained Union Rags, said his star colt was doing fine after his disappointing seventh place finish.
