Creative Cause ready to head a different direction
Heinz Steinmann’s 3-year-old colt, Creative Cause has only defeated I’ll Have Another as a juvenile in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on 7 August, 2011, at Del Mar, but as a three-year-old I’ll Have Another has been unbeatable not only by Creative Cause but
the rest of this awesome 3-year-old division.
Mike Harrington trained Creative Cause came face to face to Paul Reddam’s I’ll Have Another on three occasions as a sophomore. Starting with the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, Creative Cause was nosed out by I’ll Have Another, but in the Kentucky Derby Creative
Cause was no match to winner, finishing fifth in a field of 20.
Though, the Preakness Stakes was much better for Creative Cause, but even then, the gray colt watched I’ll Have Another tackle Bodemeister and win it by a neck from afar, as he finished third on the day.
Mike Harrington and Heinz Steinmann have decided to skip the Belmont Stakes, and decided their colt can’t take much torment from a colt who is bidding to become the 12th horse to win the ever-so-elusive Triple Crown.
Instead, Creative Cause’ connections are opting for an entirely different approach, a change in surface, which after dirt is going to be turf, and since they don’t have much turf races for three-year-old races, Mike Harrington will have to keep a tab on
the racing calendar for the year 2012.
“He’s fine, we just elected to give him a little rest,” Harrington said. “He’s had a tough campaign and he deserves a break. He’s been running the same Beyers every time and I’ll Have Another keeps getting better and better, so it doesn’t make sense to keep
trying him. I got him to run a big number early in the year, but he just hasn’t improved off it. We’ve been contemplating running him on the grass, so that gives us more options.”
The Giant’s Causeway colt is pointed at the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes on 4 July, 2012, at Hollywood Park’s poly track, and if he doesn’t make that lineup, he might wait for the two offered at Del Mar.
