Creative Cause will take on Drill and Secret Circle in his seasonal debut, in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes
Heinz Steinmann’s, Creative Cause, was third best at Churchill Downs last fall when he participated in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at about 1 1/16 miles to winner Hansen and runner up Union Rags.
Mike Harrington trained 3-year-old colt is now preparing for his first start of the new campaign in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes on 19 February, 2012, at Santa Anita Park over at 7 furlongs on the venue’s dirt course.
The Kentucky bred son of Giant’s Causeway, out of mare Dream of Summer by Siberian Summer, Creative Cause will meet the Bob Baffert duo in the San Vicente Stakes, Secret Circle and Drill.
Both his adversaries have made their 2012 debut. Michael E. Pegram owned 3-year-old colt, Drill, made his sophomore debut in the San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course on 22 January, 2012, at about six and a half furlongs, and finished a distant
fifth to winner Midnight Transfer.
The Lawyer Ron colt, out of mare Cat Dancer by Storm Cat, Drill is a Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity winner, but after that he has gone on a 5 race losing streak, his best performance in the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes where he finished second to Creative Cause.
Drill has been heavily raced in his juvenile campaign, where he broke his maiden at second asking at Del Mar.
Secret Circle has slightly better credentials than his stable mate, as the Kentucky bred son of Eddington, remained undefeated in his juvenile season with 3 wins in as many starts, including a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint, and prior to the Breeders’
Cup he nabbed the Jack Goodman Stakes after his maiden special weight race, which he broke at first asking.
His seasonal debut came at Santa Anita, stretched out to a mile in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, where he got defeated by Out of Bound, in second place.
Creative Cause is 3-1-1 out of 5 starts last year, and he turned in six furlongs over at the Hollywood Park’s cushion track in 1 minute and 13 4/5 seconds on 4 February, 2012, ahead of the San Vicente Stakes which will be contested over a distance of seven
furlongs.
