Question:

Creative Hockey Tie Breaking System. What do you suggest?

Some people have a real problem with the shootout and in some respects so do I. I do like the 5 minutes of 4 on 4. However I think the regular season needs a different tie breaking method.

My fave is, remember that game Ice Hockey for Nintendo. 5 on 5 for 5 minutes, no goalies. Yeah!

Give me your ideas. They must:

Preserve the integrity of hockey.

Not elicit a response from the coaches as "That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard."

Not put players in any additional risk.

  1. I like ties.  Its unadulterated.

  2. I hated that game... I'm red/green colorblind and couldn't tell most of the teams apart.  It was REALLY frustrating, heh.  (Plus, it wasn't goalie-free until the 3rd OT).

I'd suggest making the OT longer... maybe a full 5 on 5 period?  Then, if you still hate ties, maybe a shootout after that?

I just hate when a team has a PP in OT, since it's 40% of the overtime!  It really favors one team that way.  Plus, some teams are much better 4 on 4 than others.

  3. 4-on-4 for 20 minutes. Eliminate the OTL point for the loser, to make them play harder.  If no one scores, it remains a tie. This will restore the integrity of the game by eliminating the 3-point game.

  4. I like the shoot out

  5. I think the shootout  is great. But since you asked I will give my

    idea for a tiebreaker.

First you need to pick 3 wives from each team. Then have them pillow fight in high heels at center ice.The last wife standing gets the extra point for the team.

This sounds crazy, and it is.But the ratings for o.t. games would put Hockey back in the National spotlight.

  6. One that I heard that I thought was better than shootout is 1 minute alternating power plays.  Like the shootout, it would go in rounds.  If the 1st team scored, the 2nd team would still get a chance on the powerplay to tie up the round.  At least this would make the game decided by a team effort and not an individual skills competition.

  7. have 4 pucks lined up at each blue line, and have all your players at their own bench... have 1 player from each team race to the opposing teams goalie and while skating get a puck... and if the player scores.. leave the puck in the net... 3 pucks left... and if the player doesn't score... put the puck back to the blue line and skate back to the bench.. and make sure they do that "props" thing.. with the fist... only 1 player from each team must be on the ice at a time.

  8. 1 on 3 with a golie on the team with 1 on it... it would be a coint toss for who wants what

  9. 1 extra period of 5 on 5 hockey would be perfect.

  10. I would like sort of the basketball OT where it is just an extra period except in hockey it would be 40 min. and no stoppage.

  11. I like RedWings'. It's like an adaption of college fiootball's OT rules

  12. First team to take a penalty in overtime should lose

  13. Rock, Paper, Scissors

    or

just do how they play in the playoffs

  14. 4 on 4 overtime, but once the puck goes into the zone, there is no offsides, to clear the zone the puck must go pass the red line. I think it might spread the game out a little bit there

    OR

like in minor hockey... 5 on 5 for 1 minute, 4 on4, 3 on 3, 2 on 2, then 1 on 1. should give a little bit of buzz in the building
