OK - Be honest

Do YOU think that giving your child "unique" baby names reflects something about you? Do you think that by providing your child a one-of-a-kind name, you will be ensuring a creative child?

Oh, and by unique, I don't mean names that have been used before, but have fallen out of style. I mean names like:

creating a name by combining 2 different names

Mike and Suzy would be Mizy?

Misspelling a name so that the person will ALWAYS have to spell it for others

Michelle becomes Meeshyle

Or spelling a common word backwards

Heaven = Nevaeh

Or maybe just using some random noun

Apple, Pilot

Or maybe you want to have K-8?

  1. Nope.  I think made up names are lacking in substance and character, doing the exact opposite that parents who choose those names think they are doing.  I look at an Apple and just think Mom was hungry during her pregnancy.  Neveah is the ultimate cheese and parents who use it think it's sooooo clever.   The combination names just make the parents look like egomaniacs.

My daughter has a beautiful, classic name and still manages to have a wonderful, creative spirit despite having a normal name.  A-ma-z-ing!

  2. well my name is "emerald sky"

    for no particular reason

hah, i hate it ... others say its "beautiful"

i have ppl call me "emy" for short

  3. it reflects something about a person, of course. like if some lady decides to name her child Taquishia, that's just weird

  4. Umm, I prefer naming your kid a normal name and let them decide if they want to act unique. Why would you force uniqueness upon someone?

Didn't a celebrity name her kid apple. That's just weird.

BTW: Why would you want to make a kid have to spell their name repeatedly because it's a weird spelling. Seriously, that would just get super annoying fast. haha

  5. i prefer just regular names, i don't like creative or made up names and i don't like when someone takes a normal name like michelle and spells it all messed up, it's like they want a creative name but they are scared to use one so they take a normal name and mix it all up.

i say stick with a normal name.

  6. My name is Victoria, and my parents named me after Queen Victoria. Everybody says it's "pretty" or "beautiful" but I don't really like it that much. I have to say, my name is special to everybody.

If I were you, i'll name the baby after someone you admire, or name it after your honeymoon (well it depends how unique the name is).

  7. I personally have a name that my parents made up and I love it. It really defines you since it's so different from everyone however it is something to consider that you do not want your child to be made fun of. Just make sure that when you pick the unique name that you are considering such things that may arise once your child grows up.

    Hope this helps!

  8. creative

  9. I think some "unique" names are just ridiculous...I knew a little girl named Rainbow, and I felt so sorry for her...that's not a real name! Names like Apple sound like pet names, and should be left as that (names for pets, or nicknames).

Misspelled names...*I hate them. There are 'acceptable' spellings  and variations of names, people need to stop with the ridiculus spellings (Jessica should not be spelled Jehsikka...it just looks STUPID).

Sometimes, spelling a common word backwards comes out decent (Naveah is not so bad...it looks and sounds pretty, and is easily pronounced, at least.)

New names are okay, but people need to stop naming their cildren things like Lala, Caite (pronounced Kate), Kamrin (pronounced Cameron), and Audio Science. Note: these are all names people really have given children! [Audio Science is the son of Shannyn Sossaman & Dallas Clayton. And for goodness' sake, don't name your child COCO!! (daughter of Courteney Cox...can you imagine being named Coco Cox???)

Some people just go too far.

  10. Ceating a name by combining 2 different names ~

To me, it depends on what the two names are and if the combination sounds really crazy or not. Like Mizy is a little weird. But maybe combining Savannah and Katherine to make Kavannah isn't too bad. Or Emily and Elyse to make Emilyse (em-ih-leese).

Misspelling a name so that the person will ALWAYS have to spell it for others ~

I like SOME "mispellings" if thats what you call them. I don;t like Meeshyle though, but I do like Michele which isn;t too crazy or anything. Other examples that look ok to me: Denise = Danese. Jaden = Jadyn. Katherine = Kathryne. Lydia = Liddia.

Or spelling a common word backwards ~

It really bothers me when people do that! Especially Nevaeh, it looks terrible.

Or maybe just using some random noun ~

Thats cruel! Like Book(er), Pine, Tree, etc. Yuck!

    :o)

  11. I think naming your child something unique and creative is good, but then again there are names that are way too out there, and there have been studies done that show those kids have a hard time fitting in growing up. It does reflect that the parents wanted their child to be unique, but every child is already unique in there own way and they don't need a name to solidify that. The mixing of two names doesn't really bother me, unless its really weird, and neither does a different spelling but I just cant stand the naming of children after random inanimate objects. Names should be of significant value since it'll stick with you all your life, and i don't feel the names "apple" or "pilot" or "coco" (er...courtney cox) have sentimental value.

  12. I think those some of those are great ideas! I'm not to fond of the combining two different names though, and spelling it crazy could be a pain for the kid, but it could also be really cool. I think Pilot's a pretty cool name though...haha! My name's Brittany, which I like, but I would've liked a more creative name much better...something with a story behind it!
